Preparing for Universal Credit

Money a+e’s guide to opening and managing a bank account
Universal Credit is set to replace a number of out of work and low income related benefits and the level of benefits available will also be capped. TheTransition to Universal Credit will begin from October 2013 for new claimants. Universal Credit will consist of two elements: A Living Cost element and a Housing Cost element. Universal Credit will be paid to claimants in a lump sum on a monthly basis. Unlike Housing benefit, the housing cost element will also be paid to the Claimant and not directly the Landlord.

It is therefore vital now more than ever to ensure that those who are in receipt of benefits firstly have a bank account/s and secondly that they learn how to manage those bank accounts and prioritize all their financial obligations, here is our guide to help you get started.

Step 1 - Opening a Bank Account

The first thing you need to do is find a bank account that is correct for you. There are many different types of bank account available, so it is very important you check which will be most appropriate for you. For more information about bank accounts check out, The Money Advice Service’s guide,‘How to choose the right bank account’ (https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/how-to-choose-the-right-bank-account)
One of the biggest issues faced when opening a bank account is ensuring you have the appropriate ID. To find out what ID is required for various banks please check out The Money Advice Service’s guide, ‘Identity requirements for basic bank accounts’. (https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/identity-equirements-for-basic-bank-accounts)

Step 2 - Managing a Bank account

Use more than one bank account to help you budget
• Using several accounts to manage your money can help you stay in control of your spending.
• Divide your income each month into separate accounts – (e.g. you could have one account set up for paying your rent, council tax and other priority bills and another account for spending on yourself).
As soon as you receive your income divide it into separate accounts by setting up standing orders. Make sure the standing orders are set up for the date you are due to receive your money. This will avoid any temptation of dipping into money that should be set aside for essential bills and ensure that you keep on top of your all your financial obligations.

Check your bank statements and bills on a monthly basis
• Once you have set up your accounts, it is important that you keep an eye on what money you have coming in and out of your bank accounts each month.
This is crucial if you’re keen for your budget to stay balanced. You should check your accounts on a regular basis and go through your bank statements
and bills to ensure that important transactions have been processed correctly and to make sure that no suspicious spending is showing on your accounts.

• Review your spending on a monthly basis, this will highlight where you might be over spending and encourage you to make cuts if necessary.

Keep a spending diary
• Keeping a spending diary for a few weeks is a good way to check that your money is really going where it should.

• Buy yourself a small note pad or if you have a smart phone you can download the Spendometer App (http://www.spendometer.co.uk/Welcome/DownloadOptions). Write down everything you spend for a minimum of four weeks and at the end of each week review your spending, this will give you a full overview of where your money is actually going.

• Many people find that keeping a spending diary tends to focus their minds on what they’re spending and can act as a deterrent for unnecessary spending.

Reassess your budget on a regular basis
• The key to successfully managing your budget is to ensure you revisit it on a regular basis.

• Each time there’s a change in your situation that will have an impact on your finances, it is important that you amend your budget accordingly to reflect these new changes. For further tips and information on money management check out our ‘Money management’ page. http://www.moneyaande.co.uk/advice/money-management

Fastlove Speed Dating - Over 50s

Date: Thursday 25th October 2012
Venue: Denbigh Town Hall
Cost: £12 per ticket
Capacity: 40 (20 men and 20 women)

Speed dating, the social phenomenon that has taken the UK by storm, has arrived in Denbigh! At a speed dating event, up to twenty men and twenty women get together; they get a limited amount of time to chat to each other, usually sitting either side of a table, then move on to the next date. During the night you get to meet everyone there of the opposite sex and decide who you'd like to see again. The dates are then matched by the organisers and within 2-3 days those people that are matched are sent each other’s details. It really is that simple!

There will be two separate events, one for the 50-65 age group and one for the 65+ age group, and they will be taking place at Denbigh Town Hall on Thursday 25th October 2012 as part of the No Limits event organised by Denbighshire County Council, in partnership with Age Concern North Wales Central. The reason for having speed dating at the event is to provide an opportunity for an age group that is not often catered for to meet people in a fun and social environment, not just for dating but also for friendship.

The cost for the speed dating is £12 per ticket, which is a £5 reduction on the normal price for Fastlove events. To book your place, phone 08456 442083 or visit the website: fastlovespeeddating.co.uk

Employment and Support Allowance claims by telephone

Jobcentre Plus is looking at ways to encourage Employment and Support Allowance claimants, who are able to use the telephone, to make claims using this method instead of completing paper-based forms. This is part of DWP’s aim to give people a modern and efficient service.

The results of a recent survey showed that claimants are happy to make a phone call to request a form. However, in many cases, they do not want to continue the call and make a claim at the same time.

Yet there are many advantages for people making a claim over the telephone:
  • Can call the claim line (0800 055 6688) for free from BT landlines. Some mobile phone operators also do not charge for the calls.
  • Will speak to someone at DWP who will go through the application, fill out the claim form, give advice and answer questions.
  • Are given advice when extra evidence is needed to process the claim. This helps to reduce delays.
  • Are sent a copy of the completed form, so they can check that the information is accurate.
  • Have their expectations managed, including being told about what will happen next with their claim.

Universal Jobmatch

A new service will give access to job opportunities

In late autumn 2012, DWP will launch Universal Jobmatch, a new online job posting and matching service. This new, streamlined service aims to become one of the largest job websites in the UK and will be available to everyone.

New technology will help speed-up the recruitment process for both employers and jobseekers, by automatically matching jobseekers’ skills in their CVs to employers’ jobs.

Employers will be able to:
  • Self-serve and post their jobs online anytime.
  • Receive a list of suitable jobseekers for the jobs they are advertising.
  • Invite jobseekers to apply for their jobs online.
Jobseekers will be able to:
  • Look for jobs anytime, anywhere, using a PC or smartphone.
  • Create a CV that attracts employers.
  • Be automatically matched to suitable jobs.
Jobcentre Plus advisers will provide support to benefit claimants to help improve their CVs, to help them better represent their skills and ensure good matches with jobs, so they can compete effectively.

DWP aims to provide an intuitive, engaging and easy to use service to increase the number of users and jobs posted.

The new service is available in both English and Welsh.

Employers will access Universal Jobmatch via Business Link, Business Gateway or Business Wales.

A new housing support service for older people

Denbighshire County Council Housing Services has launched a housing support service for people over 60 (or are younger but have disabilities) which is aimed at keeping residents who live in the County to stay independent in their own homes.
The service is similar to the hugely popular warden service council tenants receive in sheltered housing schemes all around Denbighshire. So, if you or someone you know can answer yes to any of the following questions then this service could be for you.
  • Is this the first time you have lived alone?
  • Are you lonely and need help to meet new people?
  • Are you concerned about your lifestyle?
  • Is your home becoming to much for you to manage
  • Would it help to receive advice and assistance with benefits, budgeting or debts?
  • Do you need advice or support in managing and maintaining your home?
  • Do you need help and advice from other agencies but don’t know where to start?
Denbighshire has large numbers of older people, many of whom live alone. The Council’s ‘lifeline’ alarm already supplies reassurance to many and this service is available to provide that little bit of extra support to keep older people living independently in the community.

For further details contact the Housing Support Team on 01824 712939,

Press release from BT regarding G2G Communities CIC

The Office for National Statistics announced that unemployment figures in the UK are at their highest in 17 years. This is evident in Rhyl in Wales, which was named the ‘unemployment capital of Wales’ by the Daily Post in 2011 . The issue of mass unemployment in Rhyl is being directly addressed by community organisation, G2G Communities. G2G is attempting to tackle unemployment by offering tailored ICT training to help get individuals back into jobs or even to start their own businesses.

Moira-Ann Lockitt at G2G, who appreciates employer expectations of prospective employees, said: “Nearly all employers require employees to have computer skills so ICT is high on our agenda for helping people back into employment.” This identification of the importance of computer and internet skills to job seekers led G2G to create an IT and computer training course which helps people obtain the necessary skills to help them find employment.

G2G runs IT classes and teaches everything from CV writing and basic internet skills to more advanced web-hosting and social media networking. One new, unemployed learner commented: “I first came to a training session as I knew nothing about computer skills but knew they would help me get back into employment. I have already learnt so many new skills, which I am sure have enhanced my job prospects.” A trainee getting help with a new business start-up said: “I feel much more confident on the computer after 5 lessons at G2G. I am starting my own one-to-one dog training business and feel the skills that I am learning will help me immensely especially with setting up finance systems.”

G2G received a BT Community Connections award of one years’ free broadband which allows it to continue its work. The local community in Rhyl has subsequently benefited as G2G has helped to get many local residents, addressing their skills shortages which may be preventing them from finding work.

Throughout 2011, seventy six new users were introduced to the internet for the first time, 117 people attended four or more training sessions, 56 people now use the internet regularly and 20 have installed internet at their own homes.

In return for monthly feedback and reports updating BT of its progress over the year, G2G has been chosen as the overall BT community Connections Plus winner and has received £2,000 to continue its fantastic ICT work.

NEA Cymru Fuel Debt Bulletin

As more and more households (it is estimated that 400,000 households in Wales are in fuel poverty) feel the impact of increasing fuel prices over the last few years and experiencing the effects of the austerity measures, public spending cuts and welfare reform, the provision of good quality in-depth fuel debt advice is more in need than ever.
From NEA’s previous work into fuel debt advice, it has been identified that there is often no support network available for frontline advisors dealing specifically with fuel debt.  This can leave advisors, who are dealing with very complex, emotive issues, feeling isolated and uninformed.
NEA’s quarterly bulletin will cover the latest news, information and issues that affect the provision of fuel debt advice nationally and Wales.

Think FairShare Cymru

FareShare works in partnership with the food industry to source surplus food. This food is distributed to a network of community organisations across the UK (Community Food Members).

If your community group supports homeless, low income or vulnerable people, or if you are providing a non-profit service to the community, then you could become a Community Food Member.

Community Food Members pay a fee to belong to the FareShare network. This fee covers administration costs; the food itself is free. As well as helping provide vulnerable people with quality food, you will save a significant amount of your organisation’s food bill freeing up funds to use for other services.

A few facts & figures:
  • FareShare operates in 17 locations in the UK. In North Wales, FareShare is run by Crest Cooperative based in Llandudno serving Conwy, Denbighshire & East Gwynedd.
  • 2800 tonnes of food are sourced from the food industry – which is distributed to over 600 organisations helping to make 6,900,000 meals.
  • Everyday an average of 29,000 people benefit from the service FareShare provides.
  • The redistribution of food minimises food going to landfill and helps businesses reduce C02 emissions.
There are four annual packages available to you from your local FareShare. The most expensive would provide your organisation with food that is worth more than £4500 for the equivalent of £17 a week (£750 + VAT) The most economical package would provide food worth more than £900 for £150 + VAT.

For further Information including how to source funding for membership, contact Jay Martin at Crest Cooperative on 01492 596783 or email jay@crestcooperative.co.uk
